Not sure whether these were Sydney to Mooloolaba Yacht Race or Southport.

With wind from the southwest at 55 knots, Bob Robertson's IOR Farr 40 class ocean racer Queensland Maid lead the eventual winner, Arthur Bloore's Hammer of Queensland, out of Sydney Heads at the start of the 1988 Jupiter's Sydney to Southport race.

Half way across the paddock from Lady Musgrave to Gladstone, in the 2004 Brisbane to Gladstone race, aboard the Bavaria Match 38 Game Set, the same Bob Robertson, now a venerable 64 years young, was sitting next to the mainsheet hand.

Skipper Tony Kirby was helming. 'We had a crossed seaway, quite large waves and it all happened in a split second. 18 to 35 knots in a sudden squall.

It was the first Chinese I'd done for years. I saw Robbo's in 1983, from the wheel of the boat behind him and that was much better.'

'Sir Robbo tells the story of this latest effort. 'I could see it coming. I thought it would be a good time to check the charts below. I was not fast enough; I was almost at the companionway step, when over we went. The spinnaker halyard was suddenly around my leg as the pitman let it run. Just as quickly I shook it off.

It was just an ordinary Chinese gybe, no technique really. They all try and copy my best (back in 1988) but they just can't master the technique.

They just don't study enough, that's the trouble with the youth of today?'
